Helping you build a calmer, more enjoyable life with your dog

I’m Helen, the trainer behind Ruby K9. I help dogs and their owners move past behaviour challenges and build a stronger relationship so you can enjoy more of life together.

About Ruby K9

Ruby K9 was created from a desire to do work that genuinely matters. What began as structured dog walking gradually developed into behaviour training as I realised just how many dogs and owners need support with behavioural challenges.

Back in 2023 I decided to step away from the corporate world in search of something more meaningful and aligned with the life I wanted to build.

Getting my own dog, Ruby, played a huge role in that transition. The bond that developed between us sparked a deep interest in canine behaviour and training, and ultimately led to the decision to pursue working with dogs professionally.

Over time I invested heavily in education, mentorship and shadowing with experienced trainers, whilst gaining hands-on experience working with a wide range of dogs and behaviour challenges.

Today I work with dogs and owners who are struggling with issues such as reactivity, lead pulling, recall, anxiety and adolescent behaviour problems, helping them develop the skills and understanding needed to move forward with confidence.

Why Choose Ruby K9

Working through behaviour challenges with your dog can feel overwhelming, especially if you’ve already tried different approaches without success. My goal is to provide clear, structured guidance that helps both you and your dog move forward with confidence.

Clear structure that creates real progress

Rather than offering isolated training sessions, I guide clients through a structured pathway designed to create lasting behaviour change. This helps you stay focused, consistent and supported, so you always know what to work on next.

Training that works in everyday life

Training is designed around the environments your dog actually lives in, not just controlled scenarios. The aim is to help your dog cope calmly with real-world situations, so progress carries over into daily life.

Coaching you, not just your dog

Lasting behaviour change happens when you understand how to communicate clearly with your dog. A large part of my role is guiding and coaching you, so you feel confident handling situations and supporting your dog effectively.

Looking beyond the problem behaviour

Behaviour doesn’t exist in isolation. I look at the full picture, including lifestyle, routine, fulfilment and environment, rather than jumping straight into fixing the behaviour itself. This creates more stable, lasting change and avoids surface-level fixes.

Meet Ruby

Ruby is my 6 year old cockapoo and, if we're being honest, the real boss around here! She was the dog who first sparked my fascination with behaviour and training, and she continues to play an important role in my work today.

Through consistent training over time Ruby is calm, confident and neutral around other dogs, which makes her an excellent stooge dog during training sessions and pack walks. She helps other dogs learn appropriate social behaviour and provides a steady influence when dogs are learning to navigate new situations.

When Ruby isn’t busy doing important training work, she is very much my little adventure dog. She loves long countryside walks, hiking, running free and exploring new places. She is endlessly enthusiastic about learning and will happily turn her paw to almost any activity, from obedience training and free shaping to scent detection, tracking, retrieving games and ball searches. She’s also very fond of a good game of tug, and she takes it quite seriously!

Like many high-drive dogs she does have a mischievous side. She will happily chase the occasional squirrel if given the opportunity (don’t worry, her recall is rock solid these days) and she has an undeniable talent for finding the muddiest bog on any walk. Fox poo is also considered a delicacy in Ruby’s world.

“Before working with Ruby K9, I felt overwhelmed and unsure how to help my dog, despite trying everything. What I gained wasn’t just better behaviour, but clarity, confidence, and a real understanding of how to communicate with him. Now, I can trust him, enjoy our walks, and feel proud of the dog he’s become.”
